What is Enamel Erosion?

If you are interested in keeping a top-notch smile and oral health, then one dental problem you need to avoid is enamel erosion. Enamel erosion is the process of wearing down teeth and promoting dental problems. In order to prevent enamel erosion, you need to know the details about it. So, our dentists, Dr. Yakov Royzman and Dr. Karina Zaygermakher, are happy to tell you all about enamel erosion today.

Enamel erosion occurs when acid attacks the tooth enamel and breaks it down. This makes the enamel weak and vulnerable. In this condition, cavities and tooth cracks can form because the enamel is so weak. The more you expose your teeth to acid (by eating and drinking acidic foods and drinks), the more you can suffer from enamel erosion.

It’s best to prevent enamel erosion by avoiding acidic foods and drinks as much as possible. Instead of consuming those acidic products, eat and drink more tooth-healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, milk, water, dairy products and protein. If you do happen to consume something acidic, it’s important to avoid brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes. This is because brushing can wear down the enamel along with the acid.

You can treat your enamel erosion by strengthening your teeth with fluoride. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found in fluoride toothpaste, fluoride mouthwash, professional fluoride treatments, tap water and more. It’s best to expose your teeth to fluoride regularly. You can also talk to your dentist about dental sealants or other dental restoration treatments that can restore your teeth.
